If you have children under the age of 18 (Minors) then it is necessary for your to nominate Guardians for those children. Such Guardians will be the people tasked with looking after your minor children in the event of both natural parents being deceased.

Typically, it’s best to nominate trusted friends or family who are the same generation as yourselves. Although it’s common for a young couple with babies to nominate their own parents as Guardians you need to bear in mind the age difference and ask yourselves if your parents would be able to cope with your children on a full time basis, either for health reasons or simply the energy that is required to look after young ones, we all know how tiring that can be at times!

Usually it’s best to nominate a first choice Guardian and a reserve Guardian and if you are nominating a sibling (brother or sister) then don’t include the sibling’s spouse or partner (your in-laws) unless you are very sure that they would be the right person, just in case they divorce or separate from your chosen sibling. Sadly, these things happen and it’s best to write your will so that such events have little or no effect on your eventual wishes.
