How do I alter a will?
There are a number of ways, one is by writing a Codicil which is a document that needs to be read in conjunction with a will. The problem with a codicil is that after you pass away, if your executor doesn’t like what’s written in the codicil, they could quite easily destroy it and only your original will wishes are left to be used by the executor.
It’s just as easy to get a new will written. For my existing clients, if you email me the alterations that you want to make to your will then I’ll email back a new draft for you to check, once approved by you I’ll print and post it out to you just like last time.
If you’ve never been a client of MW Legal Services and you want to alter a will, please make a start by completing one of our online forms with your wishes, or, if your will is more complex, you can call us and discuss your new wishes over the telephone, we can then offer advice and our fee for making the alterations necessary.
We can produce a new will for you and once you’ve signed the new will the old will is automatically revoked, the important thing then is to make sure that your loved ones know where your new will is being kept so that they can find it in the event of your death.
Your old will that is then revoked, should be destroyed so that there is no confusion for your executors. This might mean getting it back from your storage company but it’s worth doing for peace of mind.
